Gaddar Awards for cinema talent? Not a good idea

Naming the annual awards to recognize the best Telugu cinema talent after balladeer Gaddar may not be a good idea. Many feel that the name is not suitable while the intention of the Telangana government is laudable.

Netizens opined that Gaddar stayed away from commercial cinema for the most part of his career. He was a revolutionary singer wedded to Marxism. By default, Communists around the world don't support mainstream cinema and promote parallel cinema that abides by their ideology.

Gaddar might even have held the personal opinion that the Telugu film industry is a bourgeois universe where "capitalists" rule the roost. As such, naming state awards meant to recognize Tollywood's best talents year after year is something he himself might not have approved of. It seems the Congress government is pleasing none.

A TRS supporter named Harish Reddy opposed the idea on Twitter. "With all due respect to Late Shri Gaddar garu, changing cinema awards from Nandi awards to Gaddar awards is not a good move. In no way does the move by the Revanth Reddy government respect the Telangana cinema stalwarts like Prabhakar Reddy garu, Kantha Rao garu, Paidi Jairaj garu and several others," he wrote.
