Stunning! Nandan Nilekani donates Rs 315 Cr to IIT Bombay

Nandan Nilekani has announced a donation of Rs 315 Cr to IIT Bombay. "To mark 50 years of my association with the Institute, I am donating Rs 315 Cr to my alma mater. I am grateful to be able to do this," he tweeted out on Tuesday. The Infosys co-founder's generous gesture is a stunning one. In the past, he donated Rs 85 Cr in grants to IIT Bombay.

Commentators have welcomed the huge donation with glee, observing that the amount will surely "spur research" and will generate "long-term spillover effects".

Columnist Chandra R Srikanth wrote that Nilekani is not the business leader to make a stellar contribution. Kris Gopalakrishnan, another Infosys co-founder, donated Rs 225 Cr to IISc and Rs 60 Cr to IIT Madras in the past. "Mindtree's Subroto Bagchi and NS Parthasarathy donated Rs 425 Cr to IISc and Quess Corp's Ajit Isaac donated Rs 105 Cr to IISc," she wrote.

Coming back to Nilekani, he is the non-executive chairman of Infosys. The 68-year-old entrepreneur was the chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, which developed the Aadhaar. In 2014, he possessed declared assets worth Rs 7,710 Cr.
