Was Shubman Gill out or not? Check out this little-known ICC rule...

The ongoing World Test Championship final between India and Australia at The Oval has witnessed a major controversy. As is known, on the fourth day of the test match, Aussie cricketer Cameron Green caught out Shubman Gill. Per most cricket lovers and Indian fans, in particular, it was a drop. The third umpire gave the decision in favour of Australia.

However, some cricket aficionados and connoisseurs are quoting a little-known ICC rule to conclude that the third umpire's decision was correct. In this regard, Rule 33.3 of ICC has been quoted as saying that the act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement. "The question, therefore, is not whether the ball touched the ground after Green took the catch, but whether he was in control of the ball before it touched the ground. Clearly, he was," wrote columnist Joy Bhattacharjya.

Senior journalist Nimish Dubey says that the rules talk of control of the ball by the fielder. "It is a very grey area but I can see why the umpire thought it was out. It is not as simple as 'ball touched ground'," he added.
