Web series 'Farzi' inspires fake currency racket in Hyderabad

'Farzi', a Hindi-language web series streaming on Amazon Prime Video since February last year, is led by Vijay Sethupathi and Raashii Khanna. In October last year, the Delhi police arrested five individuals for pulling off a fake currency racket. They were inspired by 'Farzi' in committing the crime.

The same web series is now in the news over a similar racket. This time, it has happened in Hyderabad. The crime scene is a fruit and vegetable market. As per TOI, the Balanagar and Allapur police have seized as many as eight hundred fake notes of the denomination of Rs 500 from the spot.

The counterfeit currency racket involved the use of a screen printer, green foil paper, JK Excel bond papers, cutters, and a lamination machine, reported Sudhakar Udumula, an investigation journalist from TOI. Vanam Laxminarayana, who lives in Uppal, is the accused.

So, what is with the web series 'Farzi' that it is inspiring criminals? This is what The Hindu wrote in its review of the series: "There are portions when it seems the writers’ research notes on counterfeit currency have slipped into the script and that we are watching an instruction manual on how to make fake bills unfold on-screen. Curiously, the writers have spent hours explaining the business of counterfeit currency." Well, well!
