Amid The Gathering Of 7000 People, Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike in India

Sonam Wanghchuk who was on a hunger strike for statehood of Ladakh ended his 21 days of hunger strike on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024. More than 7000 people were present at the spot. Sonam Wanghchuk is a climate activist, educator and an innovator, he had become the face of lakhs of aspirants who were demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the sixth schedule.

While the demand for statehood is not yet fulfilled, Sonam said that the hunger strike was stopped to end their first phase of agitation and this would become a new beginning for their next phase. Thousands of people have gathered in Ladakh to show their solidarity to Sonam in support of the cause.

In a social media post, Sonam said, “...7000 people gathered today. It was the end of the 1st leg of my fast. From tomorrow women's groups of Ladakh will take it forward with a 10 Days fast, then the youth, then the monks from monasteries... then me again and so on. The journey has only started. But we still hope we won't have to do all this. Sooner rather than later a sense of responsible leadership will arise in Narendra Modi ji and Amit Shah ji”. He also requested the public to exercise their voting rights carefully.
