Divorce rates in India are low: What does it mean?

Recently, a study was quoted as saying that the divorce rate in India is just 1%, while in many Western countries, the rates are super-high. In the US, it is 45%, the study said. In many European and Latin American countries, divorce rates are as high as 40 to 50%.

This has led many to argue that the Indian social system is built on strong foundations and that's why divorce rates are just 1% here. Countering the take, several Netizens are contending that the low divorce rate hides the fact that an extremely high number of marriages are unhappy ones in India. "India’s 1% divorce rate isn’t because of an overwhelming amount of happy marriages. It’s because divorce is still considered to be taboo and people are shamed for it and often not allowed to even consider the idea of divorce to be an option," wrote a Twitter user.

Many women and men in their 20s and 30s seem to hold the view that divorce is socially stigmatized in India. On the other hand, those in their 40s and beyond seem to hold the view that India's family system is evolved. "Divorce rate in India is low because familial stability and wellness of children are given preference over fleeting individual preferences. Divorce is not a sign of freedom or happiness. It is a sign of an unwise choice made in life's most important event," wrote Sai Swaroopa, a columnist.
