In Uttar Pradesh, gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother were shot in the head while being taken for a hospital check-up. A video from the scene showed the men, who were handcuffed, collapsing after a hand appeared out of nowhere and fired the fatal shots. The incident occurred while the two were interacting with reporters and surrounded by several policemen.

This murder was caught on camera and comes just days after Atiq Ahmed's son was killed in a police encounter. The three killers were quickly apprehended by the police after they shot Ahmed and his brother.

Atiq Ahmed, a former politician, had about 100 cases filed against him, including kidnapping and murder. He had been in the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, but was brought to Prayagraj on March 26 by a police team from Uttar Pradesh to be produced in court for the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case. On March 28, Ahmed and two others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the kidnapping case.

Ahmed had moved the Supreme Court for protection, stating that he and his family had been falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case and that he may be killed in a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police. In response to this latest incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has formed a three-member judicial commission to investigate the matter.
