The first woman mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Gadwal Vijayalaxmi, in Telangana state, is now officially a member of the Indian National Congress. She joined the grand old party in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and AICC in charge of party affairs in Telangana, Deepa Dasmunsi.
Mayor Vijayalaxmi defended her decision to join the grand old party by stating that development works can be undertaken in a smooth manner if the mayor is with the ruling party. Vijayalaxmi won as a ward member from Banjara Hills on BRS ticket in 2021 GHMC election and subsequently became the first woman mayor of the GHMC in the Telangana state.
Vijayalaxmi's father and BRS Rajya Sabha member K Keshav Rao, who had served as PCC president earlier, speculated to return to Congress fold in the presence of Former AICC chief Sonia Gandhi.
