Revanth Reddy's ascension: What happens to Congress party's caste politics?

Revanth Reddy is all set to be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Telangana. In the coming months, we are going to witness some degree of politicization by the BJP in the light of a Reddy community leader coming to occupy the highest political office.

The Congress party has been pushing for caste census in North Indian states like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh with the aim of dividing OBC votes. The OBC voters have increasingly favoured Narendra Modi and BJP in the last many years in States like UP, MP and Bihar.

The OBC push from the BJP was sought to be taken to the next level in Telangana. That's why Modi promised to install an OBC CM if the BJP comes to power in the State. In the event, the Congress party came to power and chose a Reddy community member as the CM.

The BJP is now going to question Congress' commitment to OBC empowerment. The BJP IT cell is expected to use social media to propagate the view among OBCs in the Hindi heartland that Congress is insincere about empowering OBCs. If Rahul Gandhi bats for proportional representation for OBCs in education and employment, he will be asked about why an OBC was not made the CM of Telangana.
