Congress' big challenge: Taking care of Brand Hyderabad

The Congress party will come to power in Telangana (unless there is a last-minute twist). The Grand Old Party has a track record of neglecting infrastructure development in urban areas. Regarding the infra sector, Congress CMs tend to be lacking in vision. The one regional party that has a decent track record on urban infra is the TRS/BRS. KCR and KTR added heft to Brand Hyderabad in the last ten years, experts feel.

Now that the Congress party is coming to power in Telangana, many wonder what might be the new government's priorities. If its priority is welfare and freebies, capital investment will suffer. That will be a setback to Brand Hyderabad. After the Congress party came to power in Karnataka recently, many infra projects have been abandoned, especially in Bengaluru. When the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government was in power in Maharashtra, Mumbai suffered a great deal.

The new government in Telangana, one hopes, understands the importance and indispensability of an aspirational city like Hyderabad. Free bus rides, increased pensions, and spiked allowances to the needy shouldn't come at the cost of urban development.

Another big worry is the Congress party wooing government servants by introducing the Old Pension Scheme, which is financially destructive. The OPS will help the state government save on money in the short run but will bankrupt Telangana in the long run.
