'Amar Singh Chamkila' on Netflix: How is the movie? Find out...

'Amar Singh Chamkila', the Hindi-language biographical drama film, is currently streaming on Netflix. Based on the life of musician Amar Singh Chamkila, the film is directed by Imtiaz Ali. Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, this one has Parineeti Chopra as the female lead. "A humble singer's brash lyrics ignite fame and fury across Punjab as he grapples with soaring success and brutal criticism before his untimely death," the film's synopsis reads.

How are the critics viewing the film? "The biopic is fixated on the explicit lyrics that put Chamkila on the top of charts and hit lists. Ali’s recent projects similarly focus on sexual matters, including the shows She, about a repressed police constable, and Dr Arora, about a sexologist," analyzed Scroll in its review.

"Diljit Dosanjh internalises Amar Singh Chamkila’s hard-scrabble life and pain, and distills it into his fine-grained performance, playing an artiste who lived and died by his beliefs," opined Indian Express in its 3-star review.

In its 3.5-star review, NDTV wrote, "The film is mournful and festive, animated and pensive, consciously crafted and seemingly spontaneous. It is an elegy to and a celebration of a songster who revelled in lyrics that frequently objectified women but was always delivered in the form of a male-female duet."
