Yesteryear actress Suhasini Maniratnam has commented that actresses of her time used to be considered more valuable than today's female actors. She said that today's female stars earn far more than what the previous generation's actresses used to, but their value is not commensurate with their top-notch earnings.

"Despite the higher earnings of present-day actresses, we, from the previous generation, held a greater value than them," the actress, who has been playing character roles for many years now, said in a recent interview.

Appearing at a summit recently, Suhasini spoke of two instances where she asked the director of the films to change the nature of romance portrayed in a couple of scenes. “I was once asked to sit on a hero’s lap. I refused to do so. I said, ‘It is in a park, in India, in 1981, no woman sits on a man’s lap in a park, so I won’t sit there’," Suhasini said. In another instance, the star heroine of her time refused to lick the same ice cream her co-star was having in a duet. She asked the director to arrange for a different ice cream.
