'Animal' producer opens up about 'Muslim villain'

Abrar in 'Animal', played by Bobby Deol, is a Muslim. A section of critics and commentators have described the Bollywood blockbuster as biased and prejudiced for showing the antagonist as a Muslim convert. "Where was the need to show a character with multiple wives and children as a Muslim villain?" they asked.

In his latest interview, producer Pranay Reddy Vanga addressed the criticism. He argued that, for decades, Hindi films have shown a Tilak-wearing Hindu character as the villain. "Those villains in the movies sport a 'bottu'. Just because Muslim is a minority identity, they are making all these comments against 'Animal'," Pranay opined.

In the interview, the brother of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga said that 3.20 crore people (in India and overseas combined) have watched the Ranbir Kapoor-starring action drama in theatres. This level of footfalls has translated into collections to the tune of Rs 870 Cr (GBOC), he added. The film has run its course and might not cross the Rs 900 Cr mark.

With music by Harshavardhan Rameshwar, 'Animal' co-stars Rashmika Mandanna, Tripti Dimri and others.
