Union Minister takes note of 'deepfake' video of Rashmika Mandanna

A deepfake video has been created by an unknown individual to ostensibly make everyone believe that Rashmika Mandanna wore a skimpy outfit on an occasion. The undated video has caught the attention of Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who today said that the Narendra Modi government is committed to ensuring the Safety and Trust of all Digital Nagriks.

The Minister said that, under the latest set of IT rules, it is a legal obligation for platforms to ensure no misinformation is posted by any user and ensure that when reported by any user or government, misinformation is removed in 36 hours. If platforms do not comply with this, platforms can be taken to court by the aggrieved person under provisions of the Indian Penal Code. "Deep fakes are the latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and need to be dealt with by platforms," he added.

The original video belongs to Zara Patel, a British-Indian girl. "She uploaded this video on Instagram October 9, after which a mischief-monger used Rashmika's deepfake.
