Advertising personal alcohol habits: What does it say about us?

We often see both males and females post about their weekend indulgences on social media. Instagram, Facebook and occasionally Twitter is replete with pics of weekend revellers taking to alcohol, posing with a glass of beer or wine.

The other day, a young woman did something similar. And a lot of Twitter users, who are probably in the late 30s and early 40s, expressed total surprise. "There was a time in India, when people used to drink in hideouts, because alcohol was considered to be poison, and the ones drinking were seen with disrespect. A decade or two from that we have reached a point wherein people literally pose with a glass of beer as if it were some trophy. How did we get here from the old days? This is an interesting case study, which has changed our perception towards alcohol," wrote astrologer Arun Vishwanathan, sharing the image of a woman in her early 20s posing with a beer glass.

There is this view that peer pressure to drink alcohol has been going up for the past two decades. "It takes courage to defy the societal peer pressure to consume alcohol or be considered a loser. Literally, nothing good comes out of it," wrote a Twitter user.
