Do women actually dress for men? Netizens argue

It is often suggested by men that women dress primarily for men. The assumption is deemed regressive by many women and rightly so. A social media post has gone viral announcing that women dress the way they do for a variety of reasons and that men are NOT on the list. "We dress according to our waxing schedules, periods, mood swings, location, season, matching shoes, matching bags, matching lipstick, availability of suitable underwear," the post says.

The comment prompted one Akshay Surana to comment that, if men didn't exist, there wouldn't be any need for women to be fashionable except for lesbians. "Same goes for men," he added, potentially eliciting angry reactions from women.

Ali Ndhote commented, "Women care so much how they dress when they are going to meet a man. They always dress their best to impress a man. So of course men are on that list (sic)." The comment misses the subtle difference between observing that sometimes women dress up to impress the special one in their lives and arguing that men are not the reason why women dress the way they do on most occasions.

Aanshul Sadaria wrote, "Respectfully, I agree with you. That said, there is always a match between supply and demand. Why do I wear shorts and tees to the office? My brain works best when I am comfortable. Why would I wear a tuxedo to my friend's wedding? Photos. Normal etiquette. People are observing me. Why would I wear formals to the office someday and wax my hair? Vice-President is visiting from the US. The first impression is important."

Another male social media user wrote, "I agree that women don't wear for men, but why do you expect others, especially men, to compliment you about how you are looking in a particular attire? Why seek validation from others?"

This is a debate that has seen the two genders locking horns with each other.
