Laid off by tech companies, Indian talent is wooed by GCCs

If you are an Engineer or some other highly qualified professional, you are going to hear about the Global Capability Centres (GCC) sector far too often in the coming years. A report by Money Control says that about 45 lakh qualified professionals will be employed by more than 2,500 GCCs by 2030 in India. At present, nearly 1,600 GCCs are employing 16 lakh people, most of them in cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad.

What are GCCs? They are delivery centres set up by large MNCs. From tech services to R&D and engineering, from IT support to other digital services, GCCs provide a lot.

As per a report brought out by Business Line recently, more than 100 companies that laid-off employees in India since the start of 2022 saw many of their laid-off employees eventually hired by GCCs. Those who were shown the door by tech start-ups and MNCs are getting absorbed by GCCs.

The world’s best companies are keen to establish GCCs in India to tap into India's growing "high-quality STEM talent" churned out by "new private universities, newer IITs and IIITs, as well as skilling institutions and Edtech platforms", says business leader Ramkumar Ramamoorthy, as quoted by Money Control.

At this rate, the Indian services sector is going to witness further boosts.
