Nikki Haley, a prominent Indian-American politician, announced her candidacy for the Republican Party's presidential primary, making her the first contender against the former President, Donald Trump, in his bid for the White House in 2024.

In a video message, Haley stated that America needs a new generation of leadership to strengthen the country and turn it towards fiscal responsibility, secure borders, and pride. Haley was the Governor of South Carolina for two terms and the former United States ambassador to the United Nations. She is the third Indian-American to run for the US presidency in three consecutive election cycles.

Haley is the second woman of colour to ever seek the Republican Party's nomination for the White House, with the first being Angel Joy Chavis Rocker, a school counsellor from Florida who ran in 2000. She will have to win the Republican Party's presidential primary in January 2024 to run for president.

Indian Americans welcomed her announcement, with Republican fundraiser Sampat Shivangi praising her efforts to connect with India's leadership.
