Every government in India, no matter how strong or weak it is, there will be some moments when things go out of control and become a boon for the opposition. In the UPA II government, the agitation by Anna Hazare and the support by Arvind Kejriwal turned the tide against the Congress led union government and scripted its miserable downfall in the 2014 elections.

The anti corruption movement scripted the ouster of Manmohan Singh government after winning in 2004 and 2009. It was Narendra Modi who acquired a cult status and his stature grew considerably becoming a juggernaut and he eventually toppled other contenders in the BJP to emerge as the PM candidate. Modi scripted history with record wins in 2014 and 2019 elections.

The BJP looks unbeatable despite allegations of corruption in Rafael deal. Later, the farmer agitation forced the party to climb down particularly after the BJP leader's convoy drove into farmers, killing many in the incident. The party slowly recovered from this. Even covid issue handling was criticized by the opposition but every time the ruling party gained an upper hand.

Now the Adani issue is becoming bigger by the day. Over the last few years, many leaders questioned the rationale behind the Adani group monopolizing everything right from airports, to seaports, mines and every other industry. This was dismissed as mere allegations by both Adani and his alleged backers, mainly the BJP central leadership.

With the recent Hindenburg report leading to wipe out of $100 billion value from the Adani group, there is a growing chorus among the entire opposition in India that it's time to tie bell to the cat. The parliament is now being rocked with protests by the entire opposition parties with a demand for a JPC probe and detailed investigation into the allegations made by the US based agency.

Whether the Modi-Shah duo can successfully tide over this issue has to be seen keenly failing which it might become a political hot potato and something which is too hot to handle, particularly in an election year. If the Adani scandal is indeed true, it might spell trouble for the BJP which has been looking invincible till now.
