The latest toll figures pertaining to the major earthquake that jolted Southeast Turkey and Northern Syria has crossed 25000 according to official count while thousands more are still missing. Most of them are now expected to not survive after getting trapped under debris for the last four days.

The President of Turkey who has ruled the country since 2003 and known for his dictatorial attitude and heavy handedness all over the world, has been facing a lot of criticism for failing to enforce building codes designed to withstand such large-scale earthquakes. With lax monitoring as well as inability to quickly mobilize rescue teams, Erdogan is facing flak from all quarters.

While the 1999 earthquake propelled him to power, many feel that with elections due in May this year, he may face the music of voters to a strong extent due to inept handling of the current disaster.
