Critics praise Telugu-language Indie film 'Double Engine'

Indie filmmakers Rohit Penumatsa and Camp Sasi, who have previously made web series like 'Story Discussion' and 'Nirudyoga Natulu', have come in for critical acclaim for their latest feature film, 'Double Engine'. The film was released in theatres on January 5.

The critical acclaim is impressive. In its review, The Hindu opined that Penumatsa and Sasi are the flagbearers of underground indie Telugu cinema and that 'Double Engine' is their quirky adventure and coming-of-age story. The review described Vivek Sagar’s music as immersive. "The film has a mix of amateurs and theatre actors playing characters who hail from an arid hamlet in Telangana," the review added. Vivek Sagar has previously composed music for mainstream features like 'Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi'.

In its review, Film Companion opined that the film is hyper-realistic both at the taking and writing level. "The emotions here are restrained but authentic," the reviewer added. "Realistic yet out of the world at times. It feels like it does nothing while watching but it stays with you for a long time after watching," wrote Sripal Sama.

In a recent interview, the director said that the biggest challenge for Indie filmmakers is finding a producer. "Money is the biggest problem. That’s why we are trying the organic method. In this process, not just actors, we have also built a very strong technical base, in terms of cameramen, music directors, mixing, etc. We always try to put most of our funds into post-production to get that fine quality," they told Cinema Express.
