The Supreme Court of India today opined that love marriages are the leading cause of divorces in India. The opinion was expressed by Justice BR Gavai.
Needless to say, the observation has been trolled by Netizens for its sweeping nature. Many youngsters on Facebook and Twitter were seen saying that the judge is patently generalizing in his attitude.
Netizens say that it is unfair to generalize that most divorces occur in love marriages. "Relationships are complex, and numerous factors contribute to their success or failure. Let's move away from stereotypes and support healthy, respectful partnerships regardless of their origins," wrote Shikhar Ganjoo.
A Twitter user said that, in many arranged marriages, love is not even a prerequisite. "So if people enter into these marriages for reasons other than love, how can they request a divorce solely due to the lack of love or intimacy?" he asked.
Another Netizen said that the SC is very confused. "The SC thinks that mostly love marriages lead to divorces. The same SC has a positive opinion about same-sex marriage that is always a love marriage by default," wrote Bipasha.
