Report says only 0.3% of Indians go to a gym!

The Indian fitness industry has not witnessed rapid growth in gym memberships, a recent study said. Much to everyone's shock, the report added that only about 50 lakhs hold a gym membership. More people must be going to a gym. Those who don't hold gym memberships were not counted in the study. As such the 50 lakh number is an undercount.

Nevertheless, the numbers are low. As per a businessman, strength training is integral to increasing healthspan and therefore, it is worrisome that Indians are not focused enough on gymming. "There is enough research to prove that exercise delays death and prevents cognitive and physical decline better than any other intervention," he wrote.

That said, fitness is growing in its ambit. Physically visiting a gym is not the only aspect that counts. Fitness trackers, wellness apps, virtual classes, and wearable technology are becoming more important in metros, proving that more and more Indians are fitness-conscious. A recent ToI report quoted Allied Market Research as saying that the online fitness market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 33.1% to reach $59.231 million by 2027.
