The importance of organ donation and timely availability for saving lives goes beyond words and the healthcare industry is working on various means to make this more effective. Now, an interesting initiative was undertaken which is being deemed as a success.

Well, the Texas Tech University’s Reese Technology Center used a drone to transport organs from Texas to Oklahoma and this unmanned vehicle carrying 400lbs of weight travelled around 350 miles successfully. In the next leg, the drone touched San Antonio International Airport and returned to Reese Center.

The flight took off from Dallas using robotic technology and proved to be successful. Normally, heart and lungs need to be transported within 8 hours while livers and kidneys need to be transported within 12 and 36 hours respectively. Through this technology, the makers are confident that they are going to save more lives. The whole experiment was organized by Texas Organ Sharing Alliance in association with Lifeshare of Oklahoma city and LifeGift of Houston and they partnered with Matador Consortium who was the main sponsor.
