In the opening match of the IPL season, Chennai Super Kings suffered a defeat, marking a repeat of history from last year. Despite their efforts, Chennai failed to beat the Gujarat Titans who had made their debut in the previous season. These two teams had clashed twice before in the IPL, and on both occasions, Gujarat had emerged victorious while chasing.

Chennai was determined to reverse this trend and begin the new season on a winning note. However, things didn't go as planned for the team that lost the toss and had to bat first. While opener Ruthuraj Gaikwad once again displayed his skill with the bat, scoring an impressive 92 runs in just 50 balls, the other batsmen failed to perform as expected. This was Ruthuraj's third consecutive half-century against Gujarat, having scored half-centuries in the two matches he played against them last year.

Unfortunately, in those two matches, the other batters had also failed to score enough runs, leading to Chennai's defeat. And now, the same situation repeated itself once again.  Furthermore, Chennai's bowling attack lacked any standout performers, with debutant Rajvardhan Hungrekar being the only one to impress with three wickets. Gujarat chased down the target with ease, with Gill and other batsmen guiding them to victory. In the end, Rashid Khan sealed the win for Gujarat with four sixes.
