In what was meant to be a death blow to black money, PM Narendra Modi had announced demonetization which created a major shock effect. Later on, he also introduced the 2000 rupee currency note with the objective that it would discourage the use of more currency. In 2019, the printing of these notes also stopped.

However, the big question among many is, why are these notes not being seen in the market? Speculation is rife that these notes have been stacked away by all those bigshots as part of their black money. Given the value, it is easier to store unofficial money using these notes. If this is true then the whole purpose of demonetization is lost.

In continuation to that, few financial experts are saying since these notes are anyhow not circulating in the market, why doesn't the RBI and government take a call and ban these notes. For now, the status of 2000 rupee notes is in limbo but they are being used in rare situations as their presence has reduced significantly in the last 5 years.
