It is known that China has recently lifted its zero covid policy following protests from its citizens across various cities. This has led to a sudden spurt of cases. According to the Washington-based Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the country may see a peak of 3.2 lakh deaths by 1st of April, 2023 if the current trend continues.
Ineffective vaccination and the lack of natural recovery, i.e., herd immunity from prior covid infection are some of the reasons for the explosion of Covid-19 cases in China, which is causing a new alarm all over the world. There are fears that a new variant may develop in this scenario since the conditions in China are ripe for it. Moreover, it is predicted that there may be a million deaths occurring easily in China in 2023 because of coronavirus infections.
