Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed remorse for the decision to lay off approximately 12,000 employees, and stated that he takes full responsibility for the actions that led to this outcome. In an email to staff, Pichai said that the company has already sent notifications to affected employees in the US, and that this process will take longer in other countries due to local laws and regulations.

The layoffs will affect roles across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions. In the US, Google will pay employees during the full notice period and offer a severance package starting at 16 weeks salary, plus two weeks for each additional year of service at the company, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU stock vesting.

The company will also provide job placement services, immigration support, and six months of healthcare coverage for affected employees. Pichai stated that these layoffs are necessary in order to sharpen focus, reengineer costs, and direct talent and resources to the company's most important priorities.
